Tobey Balazs, MSN, FNP Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Tobey received her bachelor’s in Biology with a minor in animal science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. She became interested in Advanced Practice Nursing during her senior year, and was accepted into the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing as a student of the Accelerated Second Degree Program. She graduated from the program with her bachelor’s in Nursing and her master’s in Nursing. While earning her degrees, Tobey trained as a Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Registered Nurse at the Medical College of Virginia. Tobey, grew up in Sterling, Virginia. Prior to joining Nova in 2006, she continued her training as a cardiovascular surgical nurse at the Winchester Medical Center, and volunteering at the Loudoun Free Clinic. Tobey is certified as a Family Health Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Omega chapter. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Tobey believes in empowering patients with knowledge, establishing trusting provider-patient relationships and listening to patients with an empathetic and open mind. Rachel F. Bonner, MSN, FNP Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Rachel received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994. In May of 1999, she earned her Masters of Science in Nursing at the George Mason University in collaboration with the George Washington School of Medicine. Rachel is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society. Rachel has extensive experience in the treatment of infectious diseases and the care of adults and children suffering from HIV and AIDS. She has worked in acute care settings as well as clinics for the underserved and indigent population of Northern Virginia. She joined Nova Medical Group in 2004. Kathy Dewey, MSN, FNP Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Kathy received her master’s degree in 1996 as a family nurse practitioner from George Mason University in collaboration with the George Washington University School of Medicine. She is certified by the American Nurse Credentialing Center. Her experience in family practice includes diagnosis and management of chronic problem as well as acute illnesses. She also provides routine health assessment for children and adults. She has worked consistently in a suburban family practice and joined Nova Medical & Urgent Cart Center, Inc in 2007 after moving to Loudoun County. Kathy is an active member of the board of the Northern Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Kathy believes in taking time to educate her patients, whether it is avoidance of unnecessary antibiotics or in setting goals for management of disease. Diane Fenlason, FNP Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Diane grew up in Rochester, New York and attended Alfred University in Alfred, New York for her BSN before joining the Army Nurse Corp. After completing a tour she married, however continued with the Army as a civilian. After living in Germany for ten years she moved to Virginia to work at DeWitt Army Hospital. She received her masters from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia and became a Family Nurse Practitioner Diane joined Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center in 2009 and is certified through the AANP and a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Diane believes in treating the whole patient and that prevention is the cornerstone of medicine. Cynthia A. Hawkins, FNP Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Cynthia received her master’s in nursing from East Tennessee State University in 1994. For seven years she worked as a provider and served on the faculty of the Residency Program at Providence Family Medicine in Anchorage, Alaska. Having grown up in Roanoke, Virginia, in 2007 she moved to Northern Virginia to be closer to her family and joined Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center. Cynthia has extensive training in occupational health and Cardiac Stress Testing as well as being certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a member of the ANA and both the Alaska and Virginia Nurse Practitioner Associations. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Cynthia believes in treating patients with respect, compassion. Samantha Taylor, MSN, FNP Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Samantha received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from James Madison University in 2006. In May of 2009, she received her Master of Science in nursing degree from the University of Virginia. Her advanced nursing education was focused on family medicine as well as community and public health. She joined Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center in July of 2009. Samantha is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner and also is a member of the organization. She belongs to the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and the National Scholars Honor Society as well. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Samantha believes that health is a collaborative effort between the patient and the provider. Sandra A. Valentine, MSN, FNP Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Sandra joined Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center in 2007. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Georgetown University in 1995 and 1998 respectively. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is an active member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. Prior to joining Nova, Sandra has worked in both ambulatory and acute care settings. She has extensive experience and interest in both cardiology and pulmonary medicine. Most recently, she practiced at INOVA Loudon Hospital providing care to patients on the medical-surgical wards, telemetry unit, ICU, PACU and in the emergency department. Nicole Woods, M.S.N., F.N.P. Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Nicole Woods was born and raised in Southern California. She earned her Bachelor’s in Biology Degree from La Sierra University and went on to pursue Advanced Practice Nursing at Loma Linda University School of Nursing. Nicole worked her way through graduate school as a surgical nurse in an underserved population. She completed the program in December of 2008, earning her Master’s of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Nicole is board-certified by the American Nursing Credentialing Center. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Gamma Alpha Chapter. She has served as a mentor, preceptor to new graduates, and has received numerous awards for her leadership in nursing. Nicole joined Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center in September of 2009. Ran Yang, M.S.N., F.N.P. Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Ran received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from George Mason University and her masters in Nursing, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner Program at George Mason University in collaboration with the George Washington University School of Medicine. Ran is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse Credentialing Center and is a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. She has extensive experience in nursing in a variety of settings, from occupational care to acute care at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Ran joined Nova Urgent Care in 2005 and is fluent in English and Chinese. PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY Ran believes in listening attentively to her patients, individualizing their care by taking into account medical, social, economic, and cultural dimensions and empowering patients with appropriate information to make informed decisions regarding their care.
